This Friday during Spectra we made Lego mazes. We got into groups of four and the challenge was to make a maze out of Legos that would carry a marble. In my team I had Allison, Rebecca, Izzy, and me. When we finished our maze I thought it looked pretty cool, but when I saw everyone else's maze I thought our's was pretty basic. All my group's maze had was a complex path. Next time we do Lego mazes I will add more moving parts. Other teams had moving doors or slots which added to their maze's uniqueness. One thing I liked about my group's maze was all the dead ends and pathways we had, I thought that really made our maze hard to complete.

I would do anything to have one day where I can just do nothing. Sadly that never happens for me. My life consist of running from one thing to another. There are times when I'm barley home for more than two hours (not counting sleeping). What makes it even worse is the fact that the rest of my family is equally busy (besides my brother, who does nothing).
As far as I know, everyone is busy. I propose adding a couple of more hours on to a day. Let's make 28 hour days. But of course, I'll probably be busy 28/7. Friday, of course that mean Challenge Friday. This Friday our challenge was to build a structure using dry spaghetti noodles, marshmallows, tape, and of course Cheerios. The winner was the team with the most Cheerios vertically. Sadly, my team was not the winner! The process my team went through to build our tower was plan and then build. Our first plan was to make multiple cubes and stack them. Of course, making cubes out of spaghetti, Cheerios, tape, and marshmallows isn't as easy as it may sound. So we changed our plan to the structure you see above ^. My teams standard, of course, was to win. However we did not meet it because our structure wasn't as massive as the other teams. Compared to the other teams' work, our's was different. Instead of have four long spaghetti noodles with Cheerios on them, like many of the other teams did, we broke down are spaghetti noodles. One thing I would change if I could do this project again is build my structure like the other teams did. It is nice to be original, but much better to win! What my team and I did well was thinking out of the box. Our design was much different then the other teams. In spectra we were given a challenge to either try to build the tallest or strongest structure out of toothpicks and gummy bears. My group choose to try to build the tallest structure, and we won. It did help that we were the only group doing height. The process that my group went through to build our structure was first we planned, then we built triangle based pyramids, then someone else starting to make the base out of them. After that we just built up. A way that my group could improve is by making the structure sturdier, after about 2 minutes the structure started to fall. This project revealed that you shouldn't trust me to build you a house, especially out of gummy bears. Also I'm pretty good at designing things, just don't trust that it will be sturdy. As a learner though I think that I know more than I did when a started. If I was the teacher comments I would make about the tower is that it is a pretty generic looking tower. I would also say that it has a strong base.Things that I would want help with when it comes to Challenge Fridays is ideas to get the ball rolling. All in all, when it comes to my teams gummy bear tower, it was one of the best. Even though we had no competition in our category. In Spectra we took a personality test on worldpersonality.com. When I took the test I got ENTP, you might be wondering what's a ENTP. Here's a hint (look at the picture above). E stands for extrovert, N stands for intuition, T stands for Thinker, and P stands for perceiver.
In spectra we got a challenge, the challenge was to create a Lego maze that a marble can go through. Of course, as you can tell the maze was made out of Legos. Me and my partners, I think, were pretty happy with our end result. We didn't just have twist and turns, we had moveable parts. The biggest challenge in building the maze was having multiple pathways but just one leading to the end. Another challenge was controlling the marble while it was inside the maze. What I would change about the my product if I had a chance to do it again, is I would add more things like obstacles and accessories.
In spectra, for a project we made an infographic. An infographic uses pictures and words to tell you about a topic. My topic was how do colors affect you, I picked this topic because I thought it would be cool to find out what colors do to you. Have you ever wondered why most restaurants use colors like orange, yellow, and red? Well you find in my infographic below.
After I finished my project I thought that I did pretty well, as you can see it's very colorful (because of the topic.) The benefits of this project, are that I have an idea of what colors I could paint my room, etc. If I could make my project better I would space my info out more. If I could do my project over again I would create it on a different site. I hope you enjoy my infographic! In spectra we made flow charts. Flow charts are charts that anwser a question through a series of questions. For example, if the question was "What candy should I eat" a question might be "Do you like eating children" then the answer would be Sour Patch Kids.
The question I did was "When should I do my homework?" I came up with it, because I just thought what question do I ask myself frequently. My first question was "Do I have homework?" If you would have said yes then it would have gone to to "Do you have more than one sheet of homework?" As easy as it might look, its not as easy. Firstly, its hard to have a to make it all make sense. Also its hard to fit it all on the sheet. I used Microsoft Word to do my flow chart. Flow charts are charts that answer a simple question, but they aren't that simple to make. The picture below is mine. As you can see its not that easy. Try it out whenever you need to find out when you should do your homework. For a project in spectra, got in groups and competed in a contest called Show Me A Movie. In Show Me A Movie you have to make a video that is 2 minutes or less that fits into one of their categories ( Show Me A Challenge, Show Me Something New, Show Me A Story, Show Me Your CReativity, and Show Me Your Community.) My group did Show Me Your Creativity, our video was about bullying, it tied into creativity because we told the story on.... sticky notes! Some stuff were difficult, but the most difficult thing was getting the right video (its hard t film moving paper.) But overall it was really fun! If you want to see it go to http://www.schooltube.com/video/aff2ed320ecd4f30ae98/Stop%20Bullying!
During class we had a challenge! We got some gummy bears and tooth picks, and had to make a geometric structure in 15 minutes. But the twist was it had to hold up a dell laptop for 30 seconds. May sound easy right now, but no one accomplished it. Here's the finish product after the laptop. |
